The Joseph Freedman Company is the oldest and largest privately-owned scrap metal processor in New England. We specialize in building value added, comprehensive metal recycling programs designed to reduce our customer’s in-house costs & maximize their returns. Our business is solely focused on the purchase and processing of all ferrous & non-ferrous metals, directly servicing our customers throughout New England with our dedicated fleet of trucks & containers.

Founded in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts, and now in our 5th generation of ownership, we continue to fulfill an important need to supply American industry. Our headquarters, located at Stevens Street, includes 120,000 square feet of indoor processing where we specialize in sorting, segregating, cleaning, sizing, and packaging all grades with an emphasis on sound environmental controls and practices. Additionally, we have several satellite facilities and affiliate scrap companies in Western MA – including an international scrap brokerage company – providing ancillary metal recycling services both nationally and internationally.

More than half our workforce has celebrated ten-year milestones with the company, and our managers are cross trained on all key aspects of the business. Brian Morrill

Brian is an Associate Principal and the Technical Practice Lead for GZA’s company-wide Environmental Health and Safety/Regulatory Compliance Practice. Mr. Morrill specializes in providing strategic management consulting services and advice to clients and assisting them in evaluating and managing their EHS risk and liability. Mr. Morrill’s project experience includes a wide range of consulting services including stormwater permitting and planning, hazardous waste and hazardous materials management assistance, air emissions permitting and reporting, multimedia compliance audits, EHS program development, permit applications, training program development and implementation, and assisting clients with regulatory agency enforcement actions. Mr. Morrill is also one of GZA’s most experienced environmental regulatory compliance trainers, routinely conducting training sessions in a variety of regulatory program areas including oil pollution prevention (SPCC), industrial stormwater management (NPDES) , hazardous waste management (RCRA), and underground storage tanks (USTs). Mr. Morrill also has extensive experience in various aspects of aboveground and underground storage tank management, with a thorough understanding of both state and federal regulations. His experience includes projects related to ongoing tank compliance requirements, operations and maintenance requirements, periodic testing and inspection, vapor recovery system testing and maintenance, line leak detection systems, tank information management, and tank closure and removal. He maintains certifications on both Veeder-Root and Franklin Fueling Systems tank monitoring systems and is a MassDEP certified Third-Party Underground Storage Tank Inspector and a Class A/B UST Operator in Massachusetts and New York.

Guy Dalton

Mr. Dalton is an Associate Principal with over 36 years of experience on environmental site investigations, remedial action, and closure projects. His roles in these projects have been in Principal-in-Charge, project management, remedial technology review, pilot testing and selection, permitting, public participation, agency coordination, report writing, technical analysis, safety, and cost estimating. He has been involved in numerous large scale Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) and CT Remediation Standard Regulations (RSR) permitting, site investigation, remediation and closure efforts throughout the Northeastern United States, Michigan, Illinois, and Idaho. He also provides environmental support services to developers and construction contractors. His broad knowledge of many technical elements allows him to successfully manage large-scale interdisciplinary and complex projects that are required to comply with state and federal environmental requirements, while always keeping in mind the client’s goals and objectives. He has functioned as GZA’s Springfield, MA office Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Coordinator and is currently the GZA Springfield and Syracuse Offices Manager.
